The best-selling Mazda CX-5 is about to enter a new era.
Despite its age, the compact crossover has proven its mettle with its enduring popularity and practicality, with 153,808 units sold just last year. Many speculated that the CX-5 would be replaced by the CX-50, but that doesn't seem to be the case, as Mazda has officially confirmed the arrival of a next-generation hybrid model.
In a subtle disclosure tucked within their Financial Report for Fiscal Year March 2024, Mazda unveiled plans for the third-generation CX-5, set to embrace eco-conscious tech: a hybrid powertrain developed entirely in-house. While specifics on the hybrid powertrain remain hush-hush, it's clear Mazda is steering towards a more electrifying direction.
But that's not all. Contrary to popular belief, Mazda has confirmed that both models will coexist as hybrids, each catering to distinct preferences and lifestyles. Despite the CX-50's entry into the scene, the CX-5's steadfast popularity speaks volumes, making its continuation a logical choice.
Amidst this news, we can't ignore the rest of Mazda's expanding SUV lineup. With the CX-70 and CX-90 debuting on a new rear-wheel-drive platform sporting robust inline-six engines, the brand is clearly not solely focusing on hybrids, but multiple powertrains at once. Bravo.
